A typical problem not only for open data is the diversity of its formats. There are very few standards in use, which makes it difficult to create universal tools and to integrate datasets from different sources. Furthermore, datasets often lack checks on the validity of records and their overall quality. Open government data comes from the activities of governments. In our research, we focus on voting data from local councils, as politics at the local level has not been receiving as much attention as at the national level. Many politicians make decisions about our lives, but there is a lack of tools to clearly track our representatives and their decisions.
Open datasets have great potential for further processing and exploitation. That's why we focus on creating applications that could improve people's lives. At the same time, we are also trying to react to the needs of municipalities, which have been producing these datasets to a large extent in recent years. We provide them with feedback and develop ideas for new solutions together. We do not limit ourselves to a specific set of challenges and are open to new ideas and collaborations.
Projects developed so far include a system for visualization of the city councils votes (Zastupko.cz), a system implementing a methodology to assist retailers in making informed decisions about their bussines location and a tool that allows users to search for records of registered pets in real-time (Komu patřím). In our projects we use predominantly web technologies, e.g. Flask, React, PrimeReact, Leaflet.
Each year we supervise a number of bachelor and master theses. We emphasize the applicability of the results to practice and good final grades.
